Intercultural May - RomaniaThanks Justin for putting together a lovely collection of images from and of Romania, along with some traditional Romanian music. Well done! He has also sent some lovely photos of the great things he has been getting up to, with a lovely mix of some work and some outside fun! Summer Garden Art ProjectA message and some pictures from Billy! Hi Holly and Hawthorn Today we finished our summer garden art project. We made the bugs out of toilet rolls for the spring theme earlier this year, so we saved them and made a little garden display that also is sort of a puppet theatre. We painted a box blue and green for sky and grass, and then we found some felt grass and flowers in the Easter decoration box that we glued on. The big flower is made out of a kitchen roll and our hand prints in different colours. We love playing with it, and when we put it outside in the wind it looks like the bugs are flying around looking for flowers. Billy and the gang. A BIG thanks to Hannah from Willow Class for dropping in to Circle Time yesterday: it was great to see you again! We are expecting some more surprise visitors at some of our other Circle Times if you can make it along Thanks to everybody for participating in all our activities - we hope you are enjoying them as much as we are!
Good morning everyone. Looking forward to seeing you all later today on our zoom session! Conor's NewsConor had a great time walking in the park and wanted to share a little video he took of the deer that he saw. Thankfully the deer stayed 2 metres away from Conor, as he said he might have been a little scared had they got any closer!! Norwegian Constitution Day - Intercultural MayBilly and family had a great day celebrating the Norwegian Constitution day on the 17th of May. It is celebrated with music, fun, games and as much hot dogs and ice cream as you can eat. We might have to celebrate it more often when we get back to school with perks like that! Attempted JigsawsGary has been trying to build an Icelandic jigsaw for his intercultural may project, but as you can see it hasn't been going well due to some people thinking that he is an Icelandic horse.... A big thanks to Aoife from Lime class for coming to visit us during circle time yesterday! We are expecting more visitors to join us over the week so keep an eye out to say hello to some familiar faces! We had great fun running off to get shoes at the end of our circle time! Thanks for being such good sports!

NewsMarta's news: Hi kids! I hope you are keeping well. I miss you all! It is nice to see you in zoom every week. Here is some of my news, I was playing chess, I am still learning so I only won sometimes I went for a walk in the park, it was nice and relaxing. It was not raining, so I was really happy about that. I have been doing a lot of cooking and baking. I tried a new recipe last week with apples. Only one person in the house actually liked the cake so I guess more for me! Intercultural May:We hope you're enjoying some projects for Intercultural May. Ildi has made a great video about the steps involved in a Hungarian folk dance! We hope you enjoy it: it might make a nice activity to try at home! Patrick has chosen to do a project about Kenya - take a look at this video he made about some of the things he has learned so far! Kenyan pottery artPatrick did a little arts and crafts activity inspired by Kenyan pottery art. He used an empty container, some masking tape and colouring pencils (paint or markers would work even better). First he put tape around the outside of the container so he had a surface to colour on. Then he decorated the outside with pencils.
Hello everybody! We hope you all had a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it to our circle time events this week! If you have any news for the blog or any queries or questions you need help with, you can contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Hand-print flowersMarta has done a really lovely art activity for us this week - making flower paintings with handprints! Thanks Marta!
You will need paper, paints, a brush, tissue and water. Paint your hand and print it onto the paper. Clean your hand and repeat the process with as many colours as you'd like! Then you can use the brush to paint in the stem and leaves. Doesn't it look beautiful! Happy Friday everyone! You might have seen on the school facebook yesterday that we put together a little video of all the pictures you have sent through to us during your home school learning. Well done everyone for all the great work you are doing! Have a good weekend everyone! Thanks to everybody who made it to Circle Time on zoom this morning and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Zofia - it was lovely to celebrate with you today! We had a lovely time doing our morning circle time activities and then running off to get our different jackets for the photo: great work everybody!
Hello all: we hope you've been having a lovely week so far, even if the weather is not as nice as it was last week. We've loved seeing people at the circle times on zoom and have had lots of fun together! Intercultural MayIf you've had a chance to think about some ideas for intercultural May it would be lovely to see any photos you have. Marta has made a really nice presentation about her home country of Spain that we will be sharing on Google Classroom - thanks Marta! We have so many cultures and countries represented in the school that it would be lovely to see any art, music, dance, food or culture associated with these that you would like to share. Or, of course, you can pick whatever country you'd like! Home LearningKeep the pictures coming in, we love to see them! Some lovely pictures below of what Justin and Billy have been up to!
Hello all - we hope you're doing well this week! We hope, if you've had a chance to think about Intercultural May that you're enjoying a few activities around your chosen country or culture. We might share a few examples of things you might find fun and interesting. Just a reminder that if you'd like to share any news with us we would love to add it to the blog! You can email [email protected] or [email protected] if there's anything you'd like to share! Zoom circle timesIt's great to see you guys at circle time - thanks so much for joining in and making it so much fun! It's not the same as being all together in school but it's the next best thing and it gives us all such a lift to see everybody smiling and joining in! The times for daily zoom events are below and login details will be shared via Aladdin and Google Classroom on the day. We had so much fun yesterday running off to find different hats to wear at the end! Well done guys - you had us all smiling and laughing! Food desensitisationWell done if you've been working on any sensory food activities at home - this is a really important step in helping children accept unfamiliar foods and broaden their preferences. We had been working through different food textures in a structured way and we have a really fun activity for this week - gloop! Gloop is made by mixing cornflour and water together to get a thick liquid. It's a really fun activity because it doesn't feel like other liquids - the more you squeeze gloop, the harder it becomes. When you pinch it in your fingers it is nearly solid but if you relax your fingers, it rolls away like a liquid!
As in previous weeks, you can incorporate cups or other containers to include concepts about capacity, or add preferred toys to the activity. You can also add a drop of food colouring to make different colours! Hello all - we hope you're having a lovely week so far. We look forward to seeing anybody who can make it to any of our zoom events this week. We have some more news updates - let us know if you have any highlights you would like to share by sending them to [email protected] or [email protected] NewsSonia's news: Myself and kids went for lots of walks down by the canal and we even saw a turtle in the water. Myself and Chloe did lots of cooking. We made Lasagne and made donut holes and we did a tapas evening also! Bobby has been busy with some life skills like peeling lots of spuds and William has been spending lots of time in the paddling pool since the weather has been so nice Sharon's news - Hi everyone, The weather was lovely last week and I enjoyed doing some gardening. Hope the plants enjoy their new homes. I will water them regularly to help them grow. Lisa's news Hi Boys and Girls, Lisa here. Just wanted to say Hi!! I miss you all very much and I have loved seeing you all on Zoom, and it is great to see that are all doing so well. I look forward to seeing you all again very soon. Here is some of my news from last week. My husband John and my Children, Katie and Kyle have been very busy growing are own vegetable garden. First we planted some seeds in the pots and kept them in the house until they grew nice and big and then we transferred them to the garden. Now we have our own vegetable patch and we hope to have carrots, peas and beetroot very soon. Katie and Kyle have been taking good care of them and they have been watering them every day. We also did some painting in the garden and we hung them on the washing line to dry. Saturday we went to our local park and had a Teddy bear’s picnic, Kyle and Katie brought their favourite Teddy’s and we all had a lovely picnic and we all rolled down the hills, we had great fun. Crafts at homeJustin has been busy at home with lots of crafts and work. Love the pictures being sent in! We will definitely be using the lego print idea when we get back to school. Sensory soupIldi has made a really nice video about a sensory activity called "sensory soup" - it might be something you would enjoy trying at home. Thanks Ildi! Fundamental movement skillsPhysical activity is so important right now for maintaining physical and mental health. Here is a lovely resource for working on the fundamental movement skills we would be developing in school. The link below has a short video about the fundamental skills of throwing, running, jumping, balancing and catching. There is a short video about the key elements of each skill and then three activities to help develop those skills. It might be a nice idea to pick a skill and work on it by doing one of the three suggested activities each day.
www.scoilnet.ie/pdst/physlit/beyond/ Good morning everyone, we hope you had a lovely weekend and managed to enjoy the sun! This month would be intercultural May, so we are inviting parents to complete a project on the country of their choosing throughout May (See message below for more details!) As you all know, May is a very special month in Powerstown ETNS where we celebrate the amazing diversity and similarities of our wonderful school community. Usually each class selects a country to study for the month across as many subjects as possible, then they complete a project and prepare a short performance connected to that country. At the end of the month we usually have a special day where we all dress in the colours or traditional clothing from our own personal country and we have a parade, we display our projects in the hall and parents are invited to a performance. It's one of our favourite days of the year. However, this year due to school closure we are going to put a little spin on things! We are inviting families to complete a project on the country of their choice together. This project can take any form you wish. It can be written information, Music, Art, Dance, Story, Traditions, Crafts anything that you have a passion for. If possible, take some time to sing a song, tell a story or create something that you might have learnt about when you were a child. Projects can be in any language that you wish. Videos, recordings, pictures can be posted to our google classroom and shared with Gary or Patrick and we would love to share everyone’s work on our school website at the end of May to celebrate all of our wonderful idea If you let us know what country you are studying we can check to see if we have any resources (videos, images, powerpoints, worksheets, flags etc) that we can send on to you. {Over the years of doing Intercultural May the school has been collecting resources for future classes to use, we don't have lots and sadly not for every country yet so if you find some good resources for country of choice we'd love for you to send them on!} Here are some videos from previous years to remind and inspire you! Whole School 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq_QkcpW5m4 Whole School 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dQDyf6CYPs Ash Class 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfamBNsCoJI&t=93s **Please note** This project is for the month of May so we would expect families will be working on this throughout the whole month - exploring lots of different aspects of the country of their choice. We are on hand to help out as best we can during the month and will be making topic suggestions each week as a guide. Tree bark rubbingsNow that the weather has been nice enough to spend some time outdoors, it's nice to have a few activities that we can do in parks or gardens. Ildi has made a lovely video about making bark rubbings. Thanks Ildi! Zoom this weekLooking forward to seeing some of you at the zoom sessions this week!
Hello all: we hope you've had a lovely week. It's been great to see so many of you during the week on zoom! We hope you'll all have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you again next week. We had a lovely time this morning doing some of our familiar circle time activities! Bug houseMarta has come up with a really nice activity - building a bug house for all the friendly mini-beasts that might live in our gardens! For this activity you will need: a box, paper, glue, scissors, paint, brush, sticks, toilet roll, stones, leaf, buds. You can cut the coloured paper into squares and glue them to the outside of the box: Once you have decorated the outside of the box, you can paint the inside: Following this, you can glue the toilet rolls and large sticks into the bug house: Now you can add buds, stones and leaves to the bug house: After this you can add a name and your bug house is complete! Thanks Marta, that's a lovely idea for an activity!
